Dysport™

Dysport abobotulinumtoxinA

After years of using the facial muscles to express different emotions, defined lines and wrinkles can appear permanently, even when the muscles are relaxed. Combined with the gradual loss of collagen and elastin as we age, people can find themselves with moderate to severe lines and wrinkles that can cause self-consciousness or make them appear older than they are.

These lines, particularly those that develop between the eyebrows, can be rectified with Dysport – a non-surgical and non-invasive anti-wrinkle injection. Alongside a range of cosmetic treatments, Dysport is offered and performed by the team at Gendler Dermatology, under the leadership of Dr. Ellen Gendler, a leading authority in cosmetic dermatology, and board-certified dermatologist.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is a botulinum injection that reduces the appearance of frown lines and facial wrinkles. It has a similar makeup to BOTOX, both being part of the botulinum toxin injection family. And like BOTOX, it works by blocking the signals between the nerves and the muscles, to reduce muscle activity and temporarily prevent contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines.

Untreated facial muscles still continue to contract normally, allowing you to freely show facial expressions, such as smiling, in untreated areas.

What is Dysport used for?

Dysport is used primarily to reduce the moderate to the severe appearance of lines in the glabellar – the area between the eyebrows. These are often referred to as frown lines, or ‘eleven’ lines, as these lines extend upward, or vertically, toward the forehead. They are especially noticeable when someone frowns, though in some severe cases can remain visible even while the muscles are relaxed.

The ideal candidate for Dysport

If you have moderate to severe glabellar lines and are unhappy with their appearance, Dysport may be a suitable treatment option for you. However, Dysport may not be an appropriate option for you if:

  • You are allergic to Dysport or any of its ingredients
  • You are allergic to cow’s milk protein
  • If you have had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin injection or product, such as Myobloc®, Botox®, or Xeomin®
  • You have a skin infection at the injection site
  • If you are under 18 years of age
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You take certain medications used for muscle spasms.

At your consultation at her NYC office, Dr. Gendler will discuss your goals and expectations with you, and taking your medical history and needs into account, will create a personalized treatment plan for you. As part of this, Dysport or a combination of treatments may be included as part of this.

What can I expect from Dysport treatment?

Dysport treatments take approximately 15 minutes and are virtually painless. Some studies indicate that Dysport results show quicker than BOTOX, and last for approximately four months.

There is no downtime with Dysport (unless a small bruise appears), and patients can often return to normal activity (excluding heavy lifting and extreme exertion) immediately after treatment.
